Heritage on the Vine: Sipping Award-Winning Lucia No. 47 at Pomeroy Cellars

Tucked into the lush Lucia Valley of southwest Washington, just north of Vancouver, Pomeroy Cellars sits on land that has been in the same family since 1910. The setting is quietly spectacular-rolling lawns, vineyard rows, and forested hills rising in the distance, exactly the kind of place that makes you slow down the moment you arrive. On a recent visit, that scenery was the perfect backdrop for a glass of their 2023 Lucia No. 47, a wine that is both delicious and a consistent award-winner.

A Farm with Deep Roots

The Pomeroy story begins when E.C. Pomeroy homesteaded this property more than a century ago. Today the winery shares the historic grounds with the Pomeroy Living History Farm, but the tasting room and cellar are their own family chapter. Winemaker Dan Brink, a fifth-generation descendant, opened Pomeroy Cellars in 2014. Every generation has left its mark; farming, a gift shop and tea room, the living-history farm and Brink’s contribution is small-batch, award-winning wine.

The name of the flagship blend is itself a family story. Lucia No. 47 honors Brink’s great-grandmother Angelina, who taught at the Lucia Falls School District (No. 47 on the state registry). When the old schoolhouse was replaced, its wood was reused to build the blacksmith shop that still stands on the farm. That sense of continuity, land, family, and craft runs through everything here.

The Star: 2023 Lucia No. 47
The 2023 Lucia No. 47 is a Bordeaux-style blend from the renowned DuBrul Vineyard in the Yakima Valley: 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and 20% Syrah. It is well-balanced with soft tannins and a velvety palate. Flavors of black cherry and black currant meet green peppercorn, chocolate, and a hint of incense. At 14.1% alcohol, it feels complete and approachable now, yet structured enough to age.

This wine has a strong track record. Earlier vintages have earned Platinum and Double Platinum scores (including 96 points), Double Gold at the Seattle Wine Awards, and gold medals at other regional competitions. The 2023 continues that tradition of quality from a boutique producer that makes fewer than 1,500 cases a year, all in small lots.

A Setting That Matches the Wine

The tasting experience lives up to the landscape. Outdoor tables sit under vines and trees with views across the valley the exact scene in the photo of the Lucia No. 47 bottle on the patio. It is unhurried and scenic, the kind of place where you can linger. The winery also offers an inn above the tasting room for overnight stays, turning a visit into a full farm-and-vineyard escape.
